The Glowers has its roots in a 2003 collaboration between DramaPlus Arts and Singapore Action Groups of Seniors (SAGE), when workshops were conducted to engage seniors, especially the retired, through fun in drama. In January 2008, The Glowers became a voluntary drama wing at Centre For Seniors.

In mid 2008, The Glowers became an independent drama company led by theatre-television veteran Catherine Sng. The group now has about 40 dynamic members whose ages range from 50 to 80. Over the years, the group has gained recognition and was invited to perform in collaboration projects with various agencies like People’s Association, National Arts Council, National Library Board and Drama Box.

The group meets weekly at Kampong Glam Community Club to create performances in English, Mandarin, various Chinese dialects. The Glowers have two very distinct repertoires—one that goes out to corporate events, local and international arts festivals, and the other that specifically engages elderly residents in homes and community settings.

In 2018, The Glowers became one of the international acts at the World Gold Theatre Festival 2018 in Saitama, Japan. Their play Kampong Chempedak first premiered in Singapore in 2016 as a commissioned piece by National Arts Council for the Silver Arts Festival. The group was also invited to present Kampong Chempedak at the George Town Festival 2019.

The Glowers had to stop face to face sessions when COVID-19 restrictions were imposed in March 2020. Undeterred, the group rehearsed over zoom and in 2021, succeeded in recording a 10-episode radio play in English and Mandarin versions. The play, Chap Lau,  became a digital highlight of the National Arts Council’s Silver Arts Festival 2021.
